Period drama Bridgerton returned to Netflix on Friday, and fans enjoyed one steamy scene in particular.
Based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling novel The Viscount Who Loved Me, the second season of the Regency romance focuses on the love life of Lord Anthony Bridgerton, played by actor Jonathan Bailey.
In a sassy scene from the hit drama’s fifth episode, Jonathan, 33, gets fans fired up under the collar when his on-screen character emerges from a dripping lake in a see-through white shirt.
Viewers who tuned in to the series a few hours after its release have already realized how much the scene looks like Colin Firth’s stint in a wet shirt.
Many have flocked to social media to share side-by-side comparisons of Jonathan and Colin, 61, as the dashing Mr Darcy in the BBC’s 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
“Viscount Bridgerton becomes Mr. Darcy,” a fan captioned their comparison snaps on Twitter on Friday – adding water-themed emojis.
“Buckle up, Bridgerton season 2 is out and we had a water scene similar to Mr. Darcy in 1995,” wrote another, with a third adding: “The similarities between Anthony and Mr. Darcy this season However.
“A wet Colin Firth for a new generation,” another viewer observed with an additional tweet: “Oh Bridgerton, when I saw I saw that wet white shirt hanging from Anthony’s chest. I know that you noted Colin Firth and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Earlier this week, the country’s newest wet shirt pin-up Jonathan revealed how he got into shape for the steamy scenes in the Bridgerton family’s latest offering.
He said new! magazine: “Step into the shoes of Phoebe Dynevor [who returns as Daphne] and Rege-Jean Page carried and directed with such grace last season taught me a lot.
“Taking on this responsibility has been amazing for so many reasons. This season has required me to stay calm, steady and ready. It has kept me on my toes. I’ve really gotten into shape, made sure to eat well and sleep a lot, and everything else seemed to fall into place.”
The actor also opened up about why he thinks the first season of the period drama was such a worldwide hit, following its release on Christmas Day 2020.

After the eight-episode first season received positive reviews and dominated social media conversations, Bridgerton quickly became the most-watched series on Netflix when it premiered – with an audience of 82 million households.
He reflected: “It’s been a crazy few years for the world, and I think part of that led to Bridgerton’s success. He came at the right time and knocked everyone down. It gave people the Christmas romance we deserved after a really tricky year.”
