Broome and Chenango Sheriff’s offices were also targeted in the scam and also released statements saying they did not sell merchandise featuring the sheriff’s office logos, names or badge images.

In Cortland County cases, the company is identified as “Shirt Nuaty” and features images of black and white shirts and a mug with the name of the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office on the items and a slogan: “Everyone World Is Created Equal But Only The Best Served In.. Cortland County Sheriff’s Office”.

Authorities say people should be careful when receiving phone calls or text messages from unknown numbers or people and do not give out personal information over the phone or on the internet.

Anyone who thinks they have been scammed or has questions should contact local law enforcement authorities.
