Contents: Mr. Di Petta and Mr. Iavarone are best known for their “Fact or Cap” series, in which they put seemingly simple hacks to the test to determine if they’re real or fake. (“Cap” is slang for a lie.) The duo said they started last December after seeing several viral experiments on their TikTok “For You” page. They are fans of the show “MythBusters” and decided to recreate something similar, breaking viral hacks. “We were like, OK, why don’t we just test them out, make it easy and have fun with them,” Mr. Iavarone said.
So far, they’ve determined that putting oil on an avocado won’t stop it from browning, spraying an ax on an egg won’t make it bounce, and putting lemon juice on ice won’t. no smoking. They tested over 1,000 hacks in all.
When Covid-19 vaccines began rolling out last spring, men also began dispelling lies and viral videos on social media claiming that things like the vaccine would make you magnetic. “There’s stuff we do that’s more current and then there’s evergreen stuff like urban legends for years that we’re going to test,” Mr. Iavarone said.
Along with their “Fact or Cap” series, the two also review food. In August, they posted a video about Korean hot dogs, giving them 7-8 out of 10 in deliciousness. “We are going into the food space,” Mr. Di Petta said. “We do crazy food concoctions, stuff, so we try to broaden our horizons.”
Before Glory: Mr. Iavarone grew up in Orange County, California and has been involved in sports throughout his life. When he became more interested in music in college and started DJing, a friend put him in touch with Mr.. Di Petta, also a DJ, hoping they could help each other out. Sir. Di Petta, who grew up in Australia, was no stranger to social media. He opened a YouTube account in 2007, which at one point became the 10th most subscribed channel in Australia.
The two began to associate with musical projects, forming a DJ duo named Party Shirt. When the pandemic hit, however, they turned to TikTok. After gaining followers by posting their music on the app, they started producing the “Fact or Cap” series.
Advice: Both men said it was important to be bold online. Many people feel embarrassed by their videos, especially since their offline friends and contacts are likely to see them. Men said that shame is often the biggest obstacle, but it shouldn’t be that way. “Everything is cranky until it gets views,” Mr. Di Petta said. “I don’t care who it is.” That doesn’t mean success will be easy. “It’s really a huge workload,” Mr. Di Petta said.
Men also emphasized developing your own unique personality. “The app is moving so fast that you kind of have to keep up with the trends while still being original,” Iavarone said. “80% of that is the mental game of posting something, seeing it not working well and having the willpower to post again and stick with your fight. Just stick with it and that will work out one way or another.
