Things We Saw Today: ‘Deadpool’ Writers Discuss the Superhero’s Arrival at Disney

The Disney-Fox merger has left fans with a lot of questions about the future of the new super-studio. When would the X-Men be incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Will Marvel attempt to revive the Fantastic Four again? And what is Disney going to do with the gleefully violent and irreverent Deadpool franchise? Fortunately for us, nothing will change regarding the Merc with the Mouth. Screenwriters Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who wrote the first two Deadpool movies, discussed their plans for the upcoming Dead Pool 3which will be directed by Shawn Levy (free guy).

Reese said, “It’s a thrill,” about Deadpool joining the MCU family. “It’s an absolute pleasure to reunite with the band, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that sort of thing. You know, it’s never a marriage that we must have seen it coming — Fox and Disney, it was an outside thing [separate] of our storytelling process. But we absolutely find luck and gold in this situation, or we try to.

Wernick said, “Deadpool is going to be Deadpool,” allowing fans to breathe a sigh of relief. There were concerns that Disney and Marvel, who keep their movies and shows relatively PG-13, would try to censor or soften Deadpool. But given the smash success of the first two films, which collectively grossed over $1 billion worldwide, there’s no reason for Disney to stop the Deadpool money train from continuing. After all, if it ain’t broke…

Reese described Disney as “very supportive”, adding “Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, we might at some point hear, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we’ve been doing it separately for a long time, and I think they’ve seen success and they’ve had their own even bigger success So I hope it’s a marriage made in heaven, but we definitely have their support, and that’s a good thing to feel.
